Gene Ha ( www.geneha.com ) is the award-winning co-creator of America's Best Comics "Top 10" series written by comics legend Alan Moore.
smoky man: Let start with a curiosity. What are you currently working on? Right now, what on your drawing board?

Gene Ha: I'm hard at work on The 49ers, the Top 10 prequel. For a while now, I've worked on occasional side projects while also working on The 49ers. That slowed me down. Now I'm committed to only working on the 49ers and nothing else.

sm: I think your style is pretty unique in the comics scene. So detailed and with strong storytelling. I particularly appreciate your human figures which seem so "elongated". Maybe it's just me but I find some resemblance with the art of painter El Greco. So, which
are your artistic influences? Did you receive any formal education or are you autodidact?

GH: I'm decently talented, but I'm no autodidact. I studied commercial art at an art college in Detroit. I became noted for my oil painting. It was the only medium which I understood instinctively as soon as I started using it. (Maybe I am an autodidact!)
But oil paint is too slow for commercial art. When I entered comics, I accepted the standard American job divisions: writer, penciller, inker, colorist and letterer. I became a penciller. At the time, my college didn't teach anything resembling American style comics illustration. So to that extent, I'm
